Backstretch Experience: A Behind the Scenes Tour of the Aiken Training Track

Have you ever wanted to experience what it would be like on the backstretch at the Aiken Training Track?  Now you can discover the magic of training Thoroughbred racehorses with a behind the scenes tour!  The Aiken Training Track and the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame are partnering to offer this exciting experience!  The tour will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016 from 9 am – 11 am.  (The rain date is Saturday, April 23).

The tour begins with watching horses out on the track for their morning training before going back to Legacy Stable.  You will be close to the horses, trainers and exercise riders, so bring your camera! After watching the horses train, Brad Stauffer, the President of the Aiken Training Track and the Head Trainer of Legacy Stable, will talk about the equipment used in training, the diet of a racehorse, conformation, the composition of the track and more!  There will also be a question and answer period.

Aiken Selected for Site of 2015 Dixie World Series

The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism is proud to announce the selection of Citizens Park for the 2015 Dixie Boys and Junior Boys World Series.  Following a competitive process and a presentation by City staff, Athletics Superintendent, Jeff Metz, was notified of the award late Friday evening.  The tournament will take place in August of 2015.

Arboretum Trail Set to Re-Open

The City of Aiken Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism will host a grand re-opening of the City of Aiken Arboretum Trail – Colleton Avenue Phase on Sunday, July 14th at 3:00 p.m.  Guests are invited to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony at the trailhead on the corner of Chesterfield Street and Colleton Avenue.  Parking will be available in the rear parking lot of the Aiken County Public Library.

Surf’s Up in Downtown Aiken

The Beach Blast fun will include two days of activities beginning with a summer movie night on our Newberry “Beach” Friday, June 21 at sundown, and a full day of activities planned for Saturday June 22 including: a cornhole tournament, Aiken Horsepower Cruise-In, sand castle building, shag lessons and much more! Saturday’s festivities will begin at 10:00 in the morning and last until 10:30 at night, with plenty of opportunities to shop and dine downtown between games and activities.
